The aquaculture value chain in Zambia has experienced significant growth and upgrading in recent years. Abstract After decades of government and donor-run programs that sustained extensive aquaculture systems, Zambia has experienced market-led capital investments that have facilitated significant growth in production. The emerging commercial sector is characterized by investments in intensive cage and pond-based aquaculture of mostly non-native tilapia species, which today makes up the bulk of annual production.
To better understand this transformation we used a Global Value Chain GVC analysis to examine evidence of upgrading trajectories and various forms of coordination that govern the chain. The survey reveals the extensive nature of rural, small-scale fish farming and suggests that farmers produce mostly for subsistence purposes and in isolation from the commercializing value chain.
We also provide data from 22 key informant interviews with lead firms and stakeholders in the aquaculture sector to provide insights on upgrading and the forms of coordination between nodes and firms.

The date of inception remains a point of conjecture among historians, but it is generally accepted that the Olympic Games found their genesis in Olympia , Greece , in BCE and survived in attenuated form until BCE. Inspired by the ancient Greek festival, the modern Olympic Games were revived in by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a French nobleman who envisaged that the Games would foster a religion of patriotism by directing the new power of national identity into constructive and peaceful channels.
Initially, only amateur athletes were permitted to compete in the Olympics; professional athletes were not allowed to compete until the s when the amateurism requirements were extracted from the Olympic Charter. The revival of the Olympic Games was held in Athens , Greece. The Games attracted a relatively small competitive field, with about athletes competing in 43 events. In the early years of the twentieth century, the International Olympic Committee encountered an array of difficulties with the hosting of the Games.
The Games, though originally awarded to Rome , were held in London. The majority of the competing countries selected national teams to participate in the London Games, and the athletes were paraded by nation at the opening ceremony.

Flowering bamboo Phyllostachys glauca ‘Yunzhu’ in flower Bamboos seldom and unpredictably flower, and the frequency of flowering varies greatly from species to species. Once flowering takes place, a plant declines and often dies entirely. In fact, many species only flower at intervals as long as 65 or years. These taxa exhibit mass flowering or gregarious flowering , with all plants in a particular ‘cohort’ flowering over a several-year period. Any plant derived through clonal propagation from this cohort will also flower regardless of whether it has been planted in a different location.

Psyche Revived by Cupid’s Kiss by Antonio Canova Kristoffer Nyrop identified a number of types of kisses, including kisses of love, affection, peace, respect and friendship. He notes, however, that the categories are somewhat contrived and overlapping, and some cultures have more kinds, including the French with twenty and the Germans with thirty.
Yet in certain cultures, kissing was introduced only through European settlement, before which it was not a routine occurrence. Such cultures include certain indigenous peoples of Australia, the Tahitians, and many tribes in Africa. He adds that such kisses can be expressive of love “in the widest and most comprehensive meaning of the word, bringing a message of loyal affection, gratitude, compassion, sympathy, intense joy, and profound sorrow. The family kiss was traditional with the Romans and kisses of affection are often mentioned by the early Greeks , as when Odysseus , on reaching his home, meets his faithful shepherds.
When the Apostle Paul took leave of the elders of the congregation at Ephesus , “they all wept sore, and fell on Paul’s neck and kissed him” Acts Kisses can also be exchanged between total strangers, as when there is a profound sympathy with or the warmest interest in another person. Nyrop notes the poetical stories of the “redeeming power of the kiss are to be found in the literature of many countries, especially, for example, in the Old French Arthurian romances Lancelot, Guiglain, Tirant le blanc in which the princess is changed by evil arts into a dreadful dragon, and can only resume her human shape in the case of a knight being brave enough to kiss her.
In Genesis , it is written that when Jacob was dead, “Joseph fell upon his father’s face and wept upon him and kissed him. Nyrop writes that “the kiss is the last tender proof of love bestowed on one we have loved, and was believed, in ancient times, to follow mankind to the nether world. This move aims to express the affection that you have for a friend.
Unlike kissing for love , a friendly kiss has no sexual connotation.

Daily itinerary Day 1: Arrive in Windhoek We arrived in Windhoek after a full day of travel from Dublin, Ireland and opted to catch up on some much needed sleep before starting our journey through Namibia. After a long day of travel we wanted somewhere comfortable to rest our heads and opted to spend the night in the Hilton Hotel Windhoek. It was clean and comfortable and we woke up refreshed for our drive the next day. The Hotel Thule , high on a hill above Windhoek, is another good choice.
The first third of the road is tarmac while the rest is gravel which, although manageable, takes some getting used to and requires a slower driving speed. The food and drinks were fantastic, the swimming pools a welcome break from the searing desert heat and the rooms comfortable. Gondwana Desert Lodge Day 3: If you want to see sunrise or sunset at the dunes note that only visitors who stay within the park are able to access it for sunrise or sunset as the park gates are otherwise closed for outside visitors.
We did see drivers getting stuck in the deep sands so take care to follow the tracks carefully and avoid any parts which look too deep. The luxury Sossusvlei Dune Lodge has sunrise and sunset access as does the more basic and budget friendly Sesriem Camping. Sossusvlei Another sunrise start meant we needed a early night before we continued our journey and we returned to the Godwana Desert Lodge for an evening of rest and relaxation.
We spent the night in the waterfront town of Walvis Bay famous for its huge population of pink flamingos which line the lagoon in the late afternoon. Passing through the Tropic of Capricorn is another highlight of the drive.

One of the earliest written records of a sign language is from the fifth century BC, in Plato ‘s Cratylus , where Socrates says: Chirogram from Chirologia, In Britain, manual alphabets were also in use for a number of purposes, such as secret communication, public speaking, or communication by deaf people. Arthrological systems had been in use by hearing people for some time; some have speculated that they can be traced to early Ogham manual alphabets.
The earliest known printed pictures of consonants of the modern two-handed alphabet appeared in with Digiti Lingua Latin for Language [or Tongue] of the Finger , a pamphlet by an anonymous author who was himself unable to speak. Nine of its letters can be traced to earlier alphabets, and 17 letters of the modern two-handed alphabet can be found among the two sets of 26 handshapes depicted.
Charles de La Fin published a book in describing an alphabetic system where pointing to a body part represented the first letter of the part e. By , the British manual alphabet had found more or less its present form. Now called Gallaudet University , it is still the only liberal arts university for deaf people in the world. Sign languages generally do not have any linguistic relation to the spoken languages of the lands in which they arise.
The correlation between sign and spoken languages is complex and varies depending on the country more than the spoken language. While recent studies claim that International Sign is a kind of a pidgin , they conclude that it is more complex than a typical pidgin and indeed is more like a full sign language. Linguistics[ edit ] In linguistic terms, sign languages are as rich and complex as any spoken language, despite the common misconception that they are not “real languages”. Professional linguists have studied many sign languages and found that they exhibit the fundamental properties that exist in all languages.
While iconicity is more systematic and widespread in sign languages than in spoken ones, the difference is not categorical.
